Detail

The National Party of Australia is an Australian political party. It is socially and economically conservative, and is traditionally understood as the junior party in Australia’s major right-wing bloc, the Coalition.

Whereas its Coalition partner, the Liberal Party, is generally understood as representing the interests of urban conservatives, the National Party is generally understood as representing rural conservatives — for that reason, it was originally known as the Country Party. The National Party is also perceived as being somewhat further right on average than the Liberal Party.

Timeline

This timeline is incomplete and will be updated over time.

2026, May 25. In the Australian House of Representatives, Alison Penfold, the Nationals MP for Lyne, New South Wales, introduces the Sex Discrimination Amendment (Sex-based Rights) Bill 2026 (Cth). If enacted, the Bill would amend the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth), which contains the major body of protections against anti-trans discrimination in Australian law,1 functionally to remove those protections.

In her second reading speech, Penfold names the Australian Christian Lobby and the Human Rights Law Alliance as partners in developing the Bill.2

The motion that the Bill be read a second time is seconded by Llew O’Brien, the LNP/National MP for Wide Bay, Queensland.3
