2023, November 27. A new Government is sworn in. The Government is a coalition between 3 politically conservative parties —

  • the New Zealand National Party (49 MPs)
  • ACT New Zealand (11 MPs)
  • New Zealand First (8 MPs)

— and is formally known as the Sixth National Government. It is led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon (National).

2024, October. The Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA) files an updated Guidelines for Gender Affirming Care in Aotearoa New Zealand with Te Whatu Ora (PATHA Secretary, 2025).

2025, March. The October 2024 Guidelines for Gender Affirming Care in Aotearoa New Zealand are due for publication at this time. However, “less than 24 hours before” the date of publication, the Government imposes an “indefinite and unexplained delay” in publication (PATHA Secretary, 2025).

Footnotes

  1. Aotearoa New Zealand has 2 official languages: English and te reo Maori (“the Maori language”; commonly in brief te reo). Aotearoa (“long white cloud”) is the conventional name for the country in te reo. While the country officially remains New Zealand for diplomatic and other technical purposes, the emerging practice is to refer to it by both names, with the te reo name first, thus “Aotearoa New Zealand”. A similar practice is often observed for other entities, such as government departments and large cities. ↊ī¸Ž
